A red-haired woman turns her head towards us, her pale shoulder above a dark green fabric. Large black ferns fill the foreground in front of a copper-toned celestial body and repeated plant patterns.
The elongated format follows the hair and fronds. Body, fabric and plants come together in a portrait where nature enters even the drawing of the clothing.
The large celestial body is worked in copper leaf. Its presence within the material of the original painting brings an orange warmth behind the figure and ferns.
