Dum Spiro Spero

A woman in a blue turban holds a large white swan against her. The curve of the bird’s neck echoes the arms and hands; black leaves cross the large celestial body filling the upper part of the composition.

The green-grey coat, blue turban and light plumage create an enveloping scene. “Dum Spiro Spero”, “While I breathe, I hope”, accompanies this encounter between the figure and the animal.

The large celestial body is made with gold leaf behind the turban and black branches. This application of material belongs to the original artwork and creates a dialogue with the whites of the swan.
